Acronym / Abbreviation Expander Finder

Text

Scan a document for acronyms and flag any that are used before being expanded on first mention

Paste a document and get back every acronym it contains, how many times each one appears, and whether it was expanded before or after its first plain use. It recognizes both standard expansion conventions: the full term followed by the acronym in parentheses, like Application Programming Interface (API), and the acronym followed by its expansion in parentheses, like API (Application Programming Interface). An acronym used on its own before either convention appears anywhere later in the text is flagged as used before expansion, and an acronym that is never expanded at all is flagged separately so you can tell the two cases apart. This is the real editorial check technical writers and documentation reviewers do by hand today, not a prose quality score like the site's readability or passive voice tools.

How to use Acronym / Abbreviation Expander Finder

  • 1.Paste a document, article, or technical write-up into the input box.
  • 2.Review the list of flagged issues: an acronym used before its expansion, and an acronym never expanded anywhere in the text.
  • 3.Check the full acronym list below the issues to see every acronym found, how many times it appears, and where it was first expanded, if at all.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an acronym here?
Any 2 to 10 character token made up entirely of uppercase letters and digits, like API, HTTP, or COVID. It is a pattern match, not a dictionary of real acronyms, so a proper noun styled in all caps or a Roman numeral like III can be flagged even though no expansion is really expected.
What expansion styles does it recognize?
Both common conventions: a full term followed by the acronym in parentheses ("Application Programming Interface (API)"), and an acronym followed by its expansion in parentheses ("API (Application Programming Interface)"). Either one, found anywhere in the text, counts as that acronym being defined.
Why is an acronym flagged as never expanded instead of used before expansion?
Those are two different problems. Used before expansion means the acronym does get defined somewhere, just too late. Never expanded means no defining occurrence was found anywhere in the whole document, so the reader never gets an explanation at all.
Does this catch a pluralized acronym like 'APIs'?
No. The pattern match requires the whole token to be uppercase letters and digits, so a lowercase plural suffix like the 's' in APIs breaks the match and that occurrence is missed. Treat this as a heuristic scan, not an exhaustive one.
