Oxford Comma Consistency Checker

Text

Scan a document for comma-before-and/or usage in three-or-more-item lists and flag documents that mix Oxford comma styles.

The Oxford (or serial) comma, the comma before "and" or "or" in a list of three or more items, is one of the most debated style choices in technical writing, and the real problem is rarely picking a side: it is mixing both styles in the same document. This tool scans pasted text for every list of three or more items joined by "and" or "or", records whether each one used the Oxford comma, and flags the document as inconsistent the moment it finds both styles. It reports each detected list with a short snippet so you can jump straight to the spot that needs fixing. It is a punctuation heuristic rather than a full grammar parser: it looks at comma counts and sentence boundaries, so an unrelated comma earlier in the same sentence can occasionally be miscounted as part of a list. It runs entirely in your browser with no external calls.

Frequently asked questions

Does it tell me which style I should use?
No. The Oxford comma is a style choice, not a grammar rule; this tool only checks that you apply whichever style you pick consistently throughout the document.
Why didn't it flag "apples and oranges"?
The Oxford comma question only applies to lists of three or more items. A simple two-item pairing joined by "and" or "or" has nothing to be consistent about, so it is not counted.
Can it miscount a sentence that isn't actually a list?
Yes, occasionally. It is a punctuation heuristic that counts commas since the start of the sentence, not a full grammar parser, so an unrelated introductory comma can sometimes be counted as part of a list.
Does it work on documents with no lists at all?
Yes. It reports zero detected lists and marks the document as trivially consistent, since there is nothing to be inconsistent about.
