VIN Validator

Code

Validate a 17-character VIN via the ISO 3779 / NHTSA weighted mod-11 check digit and split it into its WMI, VDS, and VIS sections

Paste a 17-character VIN and get an instant weighted mod-11 checksum result at position 9, the same structural check a dealership DMS or insurance intake form runs before it ever looks up a real vehicle record. The output splits the VIN into its three defined sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier, the Vehicle Descriptor Section, and the Vehicle Identifier Section, so you can see exactly which characters the checksum is protecting. It deliberately stops at the checksum and section breakdown rather than decoding a make, model, or model year, since that decoding depends on manufacturer-specific tables that vary by year and aren't part of the ISO 3779 standard itself. Nothing is sent anywhere: validation runs entirely in your browser and no VIN is stored or transmitted.

How to use VIN Validator

  • 1.Paste or type a 17-character VIN into the input, with or without spaces.
  • 2.Check the weighted mod-11 checksum result at position 9 to see whether the VIN is structurally valid.
  • 3.Read the WMI, VDS, and VIS breakdown to see which manufacturer and vehicle-section codes make up the VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Does this decode the make, model, or model year from the VIN?
No, it only validates the ISO 3779 / NHTSA check digit and splits the VIN into its WMI, VDS, and VIS sections. Decoding a specific make, model, or year requires manufacturer-specific lookup tables that change over time and aren't part of a pure checksum.
Why does this reject VINs containing the letters I, O, or Q?
The VIN standard itself excludes those three letters because they're too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0, so a VIN containing them is invalid by definition, not just a failed checksum.
Does a passing checksum mean the vehicle is real or exists?
No. The check digit only confirms the 17 characters are internally consistent, the same first-line sanity check performed before any real vehicle-history or title lookup, which this tool doesn't perform.
Is my VIN sent to a server?
No, validation runs entirely client-side in your browser. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
