A nominal return looks good until you account for inflation eating into it, and this applies the exact Fisher equation, not the common linear shortcut of subtracting one rate from the other, which drifts further from the true answer as rates grow larger. Give it any two of a nominal rate, an inflation rate, or a real rate and it solves for the missing one. It is the inverse of the question the compound interest and present value calculators answer: those grow a sum forward at a known rate, while this adjusts a known rate for a known amount of inflation.

Frequently asked questions
Why not just subtract inflation from the nominal rate?
That linear approximation (nominal minus inflation) is close enough for small rates but increasingly wrong as rates rise. The exact Fisher equation, (1 + nominal) = (1 + real) * (1 + inflation), is what this tool actually solves.
What happens if I fill in all three fields?
The calculator only accepts exactly two inputs at a time, since three known values with no slack to solve for would just be a consistency check, not a calculation. Clear one field to get a result.
Can a rate be negative?
Yes, any of the three rates can be negative (a real rate below zero means inflation outpaced the nominal return), as long as it stays above -100%, since a rate at or below -100% breaks the (1 + rate) term the formula depends on.
Does this use real-time inflation data?
No. It is pure arithmetic over the numbers you type in; it doesn't look up CPI figures or any other live data.
