Git Diff --stat Summarizer

Code

Parse the output of git diff --stat or git log --stat into structured per-file insertion/deletion counts plus overall totals, instead of eyeballing the aligned bar-chart text

Paste the output of git diff --stat or git log --stat and get a structured, sortable breakdown instead of squinting at the aligned plus-and-minus bar chart git prints to a terminal. Each file's total change count is always exact since git never scales that number, but the bar's own plus/minus split gets scaled down once a diff is wide enough to need it, so this tool flags any file where the split shown is a proportional estimate rather than a literal character count. The overall totals come straight from git's own summary line and stay exact either way.

How to use Git Diff --stat Summarizer

  • 1.Run git diff --stat or git log --stat and copy its output.
  • 2.Paste the output into the input box.
  • 3.Read the per-file table for insertions and deletions, and check the approximate flag on any file whose bar was scaled down by git.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a file's insertion/deletion split be approximate?
git scales the +/- bar down proportionally once a diff is wide enough that the full character count wouldn't fit the terminal, so for a very large single-file change the bar no longer has one character per line changed. This tool detects that by comparing the bar's character count against the file's own exact change count, and when they don't match it reports a proportional estimate instead of a wrong exact-looking number.
Are the overall totals affected by bar scaling too?
No. The files-changed, insertions, and deletions totals come from git's own trailing summary line, which is never scaled, so those numbers stay exact even when individual file bars are estimated.
Does this work with git log --stat across multiple commits?
It parses the same per-file stat lines and summary line format, so a single commit's --stat block works, but running it against a multi-commit git log --stat output will only parse the stat lines it finds and won't attribute them back to individual commits.
Is my diff output uploaded anywhere?
No, parsing runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
