Credit Card Minimum Payment Payoff Calculator

Math

Simulate paying only the minimum payment on a revolving credit card balance, given a minimum-payment formula (a percent of balance, a fixed dollar floor, or both), and see how many months and how much interest that actually takes

Enter a card's balance, APR, and its minimum-payment formula (most issuers use whichever is larger of a percent of the balance or a fixed dollar floor), and see exactly how long paying only the minimum actually takes. Each month the simulation accrues interest on the balance first, then computes and applies that month's minimum payment, which shrinks slightly every month as the balance itself shrinks. The result shows months and years to payoff, total interest paid, and the first versus final month's payment amount, making the real cost of minimum-only payments concrete instead of abstract. If the payment formula never covers the accruing interest, the balance would never shrink, and the tool reports that directly instead of simulating forever.

How to use Credit Card Minimum Payment Payoff Calculator

  • 1.Enter the current balance and the card's annual percentage rate.
  • 2.Enter the minimum-payment percent (the share of the balance owed each month) and an optional fixed dollar floor, matching your card's statement.
  • 3.Review months and years to payoff, total interest paid, and how the payment amount shrinks from the first month to the last.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my minimum payment amount keep shrinking?
Because it's usually calculated as a percent of the current balance, so as the balance drops, that month's required minimum drops with it, which is exactly why minimum-only payoffs stretch out for so long.
What's the 'minimum payment trap'?
If the minimum-payment percent is low enough relative to the APR, the payment can fail to cover the interest accruing that month, so the balance never actually shrinks. This tool caps its simulation at 100 years and reports an error in that case rather than looping forever.
Does this match what my card issuer actually charges?
It models the two most common minimum-payment formulas (percent of balance, with an optional dollar floor), but issuers vary in the exact percent, floor, and whether fees or cash-advance balances are treated differently, so check your card's actual terms for precise numbers.
Does this account for new purchases added to the balance?
No, it assumes the balance only changes from interest accruing and payments being applied; it doesn't model new spending added mid-simulation.
